Branding photos can be professional without feeling corporate — and this session is proof. For this Louisville hairstylist branding session, we wanted to create photographs that felt cool, retro, a little edgy, and full of personality while still giving her plenty of professional images she could actually use for her business.
We started at Atomic House of Hair in Louisville, Kentucky, photographing her in the environment where she works with clients every day. Then we headed to my personal photography studio for a completely different look with relaxed, professional headshots.
Two locations. Multiple looks. And a branding gallery that actually feels like the person behind the business.
For the first half of the session, we leaned all the way into the personality of Atomic House of Hair.
The retro atmosphere was the perfect backdrop for branding photographs that felt colorful, cool, and a little unexpected — basically the opposite of a traditional corporate headshot.

And that’s exactly what I want from a branding session.
Your business already has a personality. Your branding photos should show it.
Photographing a hairstylist in her actual workspace also gave us the opportunity to create more than just portraits. We could capture the environment, details, personality, and behind-the-scenes images that help potential clients imagine what it might actually feel like to sit in her chair.

For service-based businesses, that kind of content can be incredibly valuable.
You’re not only selling a service.
You’re selling the experience of working with you.
One of my favorite things about branding photography is that there really aren’t rules for what “professional” has to look like.
Professional doesn’t automatically mean a blazer, crossed arms, and a white backdrop.
Especially when you’re a creative.
For this session, we embraced a retro, cool-girl aesthetic that complemented her work as a hairstylist while still feeling polished enough to use across her website, social media, booking platforms, and marketing.

The goal wasn’t to turn her into some perfectly polished version of herself for the camera.
It was to photograph her — just intentionally.
That might mean laughing instead of perfectly smiling at the camera. Movement instead of stiff posing. A little attitude. A little sass. And photographs that someone might actually stop scrolling to look at.
After Atomic House of Hair, we switched things up and headed to my personal studio in Louisville for a collection of cleaner, more casual professional headshots.
This gave her gallery a completely different look without losing the personality we had established earlier in the session.

And this is one of the biggest benefits of planning a full branding session instead of simply updating your headshot.
You don’t need 75 versions of the same photograph.
You need variety.
Some images can be fun and personality-driven. Some can show you working. Some can highlight your space or products. And some should be simple, polished portraits that you can use anywhere your face needs to represent your business.
By combining an on-location portion of the session with photographs at my Louisville photography studio, we were able to create a gallery that gives her options for all of it.
Whether you’re a hairstylist, esthetician, makeup artist, wedding professional, creative, or small business owner, your online presence is often someone’s first interaction with you.
Before they send an inquiry or book an appointment, they’re probably looking at your Instagram.
They’re clicking through your website.
They’re checking out your work.
And they’re deciding whether you feel like someone they want to work with.
That’s why I approach branding photography as more than a collection of professional headshots.
I want to know what your brand feels like.
What do you want someone to think when they land on your website? What makes your business different? Are you colorful and quirky? Moody and editorial? Polished and minimal? Retro and cool?
Once we know that, we can create photographs around it.
If you’re a Louisville small business owner who’s been piecing together your online presence with selfies, old headshots, and whatever happens to be in your camera roll, consider this your sign to finally create something intentional.
Your branding session doesn’t have to feel stiff or overly posed.
We’ll create the professional images you need — but we’ll also make room for personality, movement, creativity, and the things that make your business feel like your business.
Whether we photograph you in your own workspace, around Louisville, at my personal studio, or combine multiple locations like we did for this session, we’ll build your session around the story you actually want your brand to tell.
Because professional doesn’t have to mean boring.
